englischThe term ‘public participation online’ includes services which offer citizens the chance to exert an influence on political decisions via the Internet and is intended to strengthen relations between citizens and the political system. This volume evaluates the recent experiences of the German Bundestag with online services in which the public can participate. It focuses on the Bundestag’s Select Committee on the Internet and Digital Society, which was known for its experimental use of novel procedures. It also deals with the online services of the Digital Agenda Committee, the commission on the storage of high-level radioactive waste, the youth portal ‘mitmischen.de’ and the Bundestag’s e-petitioning platform.

This book provides an overview of the academic discussion on public participation online and presents the criteria necessary for its success, the opportunities it offers and the risks it can pose. The book also discusses ways in which online participation services offered by the German Bundestag can be further developed.
