englischCurrently, day-care for young children is undergoing a fundamental reform resulting from the implementation of a new educational mandate and the expansion of day-care coverage in Germany. This book focuses on the experience of as well as the implementations of this reform by staff in day-care institutions.

Based on the results from research on the labour-process, social investment politics, and industrial relations, the author draws attention to the price of the reform and the negotiations involved. While public discourse addresses day-care staff to be prepared for changes in their work, superiors and parents place them under new pressures. And yet, the value of their educational work is barely acknowledged but symbolically. In this situation, significant parts of the staff engage in negotiations and misbehaviour at work and go on trade union strikes. Hence, Kerber-Clasen portrays day-care staff as trying to actively influence the changes affecting care-work conditions today.

»Es ist keine einfache, jedoch gut strukturierte und lesenswerte Lektüre, die einen eingehenden Einblick in die Reorganisationsprozesse der AkteurInnen in Kitas liefert.«
