englischThe reception of E. T. A. Hoffmann as a representative of Dark Romanticism is firmly established in popular cultural institutions: This is particularly evident in contemporary productions of the opera »Les Contes d’Hoffmann« by Jacques Offenbach and Jules Barbier. In this study, the often trivialised understanding of Dark Romanticism is countered with a perspective that comprehends the phenomenon using the ideas of German Romanticism. Using Hoffmann’s texts and their re-conception in Barbier’s libretto, this study shows that scenographic forms of irony, the grotesque, subjectivism and the Serapiontic Principle provide the basis for Hoffmannesque Dark Romanticism—and are also effective beyond popularised stereotypes.
Die Rezeption E. T. A. Hoffmanns als Vertreter einer Schwarzen Romantik hat sich im populären Kulturbetrieb längst etabliert: Dies zeigt sich vor allem in zeitgenössischen Inszenierungen der Oper »Les Contes d’Hoffmann« von Jacques Offenbach und Jules Barbier. In dieser Arbeit wird dem oftmals trivialisierten Verständnis Schwarzer Romantik mit einer Perspektive begegnet, welche das Phänomen aus dem Geiste der Romantik heraus begreift. Auf Grundlage von Hoffmanns Texten und anhand ihrer Rekonzeption in Barbiers Libretto wird gezeigt, dass szenographische Formen von Ironie, Groteske, Subjektivismus und des Serapiontischen Prinzips die Basis einer hoffmannesken Schwarzen Romantik bilden – und auch über popularisierte Stereotype hinaus wirksam sind.
