englischDespite the first efforts of an international climate policy at the end of the 1980s, India and China have become drivers of the continuing global growth in emissions. The concentration of the climate discussion on national goals has prevented an urgently needed discussion on the most global of all human problems. Germany is particularly guilty of this omission.

What needs to be done now? It is not enough to call for the 1.5-degree target and for politicians to show more commitment with regard to national climate targets. We finally need a detailed discussion about possible global solutions to climate change.

Friedemann Müller, who holds a PhD in economics from the University of Freiburg, has conducted research at the University of Moscow and at think tanks in California and Washington, D.C., and taught at the Bavarian School of Public Policy (Hochschule für Politik) in Munich. His subject area includes international energy and climate policy. For many years, he was head of the research group ‘Global Issues’ at the German Institute for International Security and Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik) in Berlin and head of the transatlantic project ‘International Network To Advance Climate Talks’ (INTACT).
