englischVerse or prose? Few questions have preoccupied librettists, composers and theorists as much as the relationship between text form and melody in opera. This volume offers the first comprehensive review and analysis of this discussion from the beginnings of opera in France in the 17th century to the prose opera of the naturalists and Debussy. These debates about prose in text and music become particularly virulent in the Querelle des Bouffons and in the controversies surrounding Gluck's tragédie lyrique. Experiments with prose libretti, questions of declamation and translation, and the aesthetic controversies surrounding recitative and musical prose are illuminated in this study, as are the social and ideological dimensions of the subject. Prose on the opera stage always means opening up to the prosaic and thus marks a fiercely contested boundary between art and everyday life.
