englischThe development of the environmentalisation of water law does not stop at federal waterways. The study deals with the question of how far a balance can be found between the constitutionally intended transport function of the federal waterways and the often contradictory requirements of water protection law. Procedures with media impact, such as the deepening of the Elbe and Weser rivers, have shown that the ecological objectives can stand in the way of the expansion of federal waterways for transport purposes. After analysing the legal framework under constitutional, union and international law, the author develops approaches to solutions in order to bring the diverging demands on federal waterways to bear in the best possible way.
