Description
On 14 June 1985, government officials from Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed the Schengen Agreement, which aimed to gradually abolish controls at the internal borders of the participating countries. Ten years later, this vision became reality – barriers and stationary controls gave way in the Schengen area. On the anniversary in 2025, however, the Europe of open internal borders is under considerable pressure. This interdisciplinary volume, with contributions from geography, history, cultural studies, politics, law and the social sciences, looks back and forward – in connection with the question of where Europe is heading in view of the multiplication of borders around the world.
