Description
Large-scale extraction of natural resources is an essential economic linchpin for many countries that are part of the global periphery. Using qualitative case studies and process tracing, this book examines key external factors in order to explain why countries adhere to resource extractivism. A central factor in this is the dependence of peripheral economies on exports, investments and credit. In addition, there is an absence of economic differentiation in the extractivist states, which leads to their dependence on extractivism. Consequently, long-term economic development is not achieved, and the countries are vulnerable to changes in the world market. This study shows how economic dependence simultaneously preconditions and sustains extractivism.
