Description
Georg Friedrich Meier (1718-1777) succeeded his mentor Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten as teacher of philosophy at Halle, where he held a professorship from 1746 onwards. In his many works, written for an educated general public with no particular philosophical expertise, Meier made a decisive contribution to the popularisation and spread of Leibniz’s and Wolff’s philosophy in Germany. One of his most important works, reissued here, is the Allgemeine practische Weisheit (1764), based on Wolff’s Philosophia practica universalis (WOLFF, COMPLETE WORKS, SECTION II, VOLS 10 – 11), A. G. Baumgarten’s Initia philosophiae practicae primae and the Iuris naturalis exercitationes by Wolff’s disciple Heinrich Köhler (WOLFF, COMPLETE WORKS, SECTION III, VOL. 86).
