Substance use disorders cause massive stress in the context of the entire family dynamic. Consequently, relatives represent an important target group in addiction care and require tailored support services within the framework of a needs-oriented and comprehensive care system. However, the designation of independent treatment needs has so far only been identified in one national addiction policy guideline. Based on an analysis of empirically collected needs and barriers among relatives, this study develops and presents recommendations for improved practice to expand existing care structures and for increased utilisation of and readiness for treatment in the context of social work and addiction therapy.
