Description
Through anti-steering rules, app stores and other online marketplaces systematically restrict communication between their users to prevent transactions outside the platform. Based on competition law and the Digital Markets Act, the European Commission began taking action against anti-steering rules imposed by app stores. The author examines what these proceedings mean for other online marketplaces, such as Amazon Marketplace and Booking.com. In doing so, he sheds light on their legal environment under consumer, data protection, and trademark law. His findings reveal scope for enforcement to increase the visibility of direct distribution in the regulatory puzzle of EU law.
