Description
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, at a time when the debate on theatre architecture was in full swing, Europe witnessed an unprecedented boom in the construction of performance spaces on the fringes of main theatres in metropoles: provincial theatres, secondary stages or theatres in private salons. This book examines spaces and components of these ‘minor’ theatres, not only in terms of architecture but also of their scenography.
Through a wide range of case studies and rich iconographic material, this volume describes the solutions adopted in different cases, highlighting the challenges these theatres were facing and illustrating the dynamics between centres and provinces.
