ASEAN and the EU in the International Environment

ASEAN and the EU – two regional organizations – differ with respect to their functional scope, their internal structure and the perspective for their development. However, both are facing very similar external challenges. There are »traditional« issues of international relations which include the relationship to major neighbouring powers (China and Russia), the role of the USA in both areas, arms control and conflict management; in addition there are »new« challenges as migration, international crime and drug trafficking, or resulting from the global financial system.
The book does contain contributions from experts for the above mentioned issues from ASEAN and EU countries who had come together in the framework of a joint research project supported by the European Commission: Each has dealt with one of these challenges from a particular point of view. The analyses show the respective responses and, at the same time, indicate where interaction and cooperation between ASEAN and the EU could and should be developed.
All those interested in the respective policy fields, in the development within ASEAN and the EU and the intensifying relations between them will profit from using the book.
