Description
‘Atheology’ is a term coined by Georges Bataille to describe an ‘inner experience’ that lies beyond all language and intention. To date, this methodologically significant meaning of such atheological reduction has not yet been explicitly applied in analyses of religion. This volume does just that, thereby making the concept fruitful both for subjective religious experience and for discourse on the incarnational self-revelation of God. In this context, the atheological reduction proves indispensable as a conceptual framework for an image-less self-exploration of life. This self-exploration is simultaneously examined in terms of its cultural references in order to gauge the future development of new rhetorical and aesthetic possibilities.
