With around 3000 watercolours and drawings, Hermann Hesse did not only leave behind his literary work but also an extensive visual oeuvre, which is comprehensively analysed in this study and put into a biographical, contemporary and art history context. Unlike literary studies’ previous consideration and assessment of visual art as the—predominantly therapeutic—sideline of a writer, this book examines developments and influences in Hesse’s visual oeuvre, its background and motivation as well as its correlations with his work as a writer.
