Description
The philosopher and mathematician Jacob Friedrich Müller wrote a contemporary critical response to Leibniz’s and Wolff’s teachings. In his treatise in five letters on pre-established harmony (1737) he identifies the contradictions in Wolff’s theories. Alongside his many logical arguments, he also cites the dangers to religion that arise from the Leibnizian and Wolffian system. Müller’s second work on Monadology (1745) questions in particular how Leibniz’s and Wolff’s theories of the indivisibility and dimensionlessness of simple objects can be reconciled with an acceptance of the principle of sufficient reason.
