Description
Bach reception is a long-running issue in music history. The old Austrian cultural area with Vienna as its center in particular challenges us to ask questions: about the commitment of Bach enthusiasts, about Johann Sebastian Bach's music in concert life or about denominational reservations. The Leipzig cataloging project “The Bach Sources in Vienna and Old Austria” (2011) identified music from the entire Bach family. Since then, it has been clear what music was collected or performed here, what was known in Vienna through the musical salons of a Fanny von Arnstein or a Gottfried van Swieten - and what has been lost.
Twelve studies now get to the bottom of why: They describe the phenomenon of Bach reception between Mozart and Schönberg, deal with the dynastic relationships between the Wettins and Habsburgs, show local influences in Styria and Bukovina and trace forgotten Bach collections.
