In 2023, the archaeological survey in Schleswig-Holstein celebrated its 100th anniversary – an important occasion to pause and look ahead at the same time. The conference proceedings trace the past, present and future of archaeological surveys in Germany and Austria. How have archaeological surveys developed in the two countries? What are the challenges and opportunities for the future? The roots of this development go back to the early modern period and come together at the beginning of the 20th century in the joint approach of the Landesaufnahme. For the first time, museum source material was systematically compared with the soil archives. This professional caesura continues to shape our archaeology today.
