The second volume "Erwin Rohde – Briefe aus dem Nachlass" covers the years 1872-1876. It begins with Nietzsche’s Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geist der Musik and ends with Rohde’s history of the ancient novel, Der griechische Roman und seine Vorläufer. The place where the Kiel-based lecturer longs to be, his “true home”, is Basel: he becomes integrated into the circle that has started to form around Nietzsche. His own circle of correspondents grows larger: Richard and Cosima Wagner, Franz Overbeck, Friedrich Zarncke, Otto Ribbeck and Franz Rühl.
