Citizen energy initiatives generate their knowledge by experimenting with sustainable energy practices. Thereby they follow a mode of learning by doing. This study addresses the establishment process of two citizen initiatives both developing into successful players on the German renewable energy market. Ready to compromise, the actors chose ‘step-by-step’-strategies to realize their goals. This behavior was based on the ability to collectively and self-critically reflect on own practices.
The study addresses questions on the relationship between innovative knowledge generation and social relations. This enhances the debate on change agents and early stages of eco-innovations.
