'China Explorations' opens up a new perspective on German perceptions of China. Focusing on the ways German travelers describe, interpret, and evaluate the Chinese language and writing system, the study investigates travel journals from the early twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It explores how language- and script-related stereotypes are formed, transmitted, challenged, and transformed, highlighting the role of language as a medium of intercultural encounter in the construction and deconstruction of cultural stereotypes. By bringing together literary, linguistic, and cultural approaches, the book offers an innovative interdisciplinary analysis of linguistic images, representations of China, and cultural perception.
