Christoph August Heumann: Methodische Überlegungen zur Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung

Despite being a key thinker in 18th century discourses on the historiography of philosophy, C. A. Heumann‘s (1681–1764) contributions are mostly forgotten. His Acta Philosophorum played a crucial role in defining the historiography of philosophy as a discipline and in establishing philosophy exclusively as a European mode of thinking. Being originally published over many volumes, this new edition assembles the key passages for the first time as a coherent text. A detailed introduction aims at elucidating Heumann’s basic ideas on philosophical historiography and takes a critical stance towards his eurocentrism in dealing with the history of philosophy. The primary text is supplemented by annotations and an extensive bibliography.
