Civil Wars: Consequences and Possibilities for Regulation

The book is meant to contribute to answering the following central questions: What are the consequences that civil war typically produces, and what is required to create favourable conditions for a stable and lasting peace after the conflict?
The first part of the book contains general and comparative contributions that address these central questions and examines the possibilities and problems of exerting influence from the outside on terminating the war and post-conflict solutions.
The second part features case studies, including the civil wars in Lebanon, Northern Ireland, Mozambique, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, Tajikistan and Colombia as well as a comparative historical analysis of the consequences of the Spanish and US-American civil wars. The wide range of case studies reveals the complexity of the subject and facilitates comparison of differences and similarities.
The final part links the general considerations of the first part with the case studies of the second and summarizes the findings.
