The study offers researchers and practitioners insights into the digital transformation of one of Germany’s largest regional public service broadcasters. Through participant observation in 15 editorial offices and interviews with 24 executives, the study provides insights into the key changes, challenges and successes characterising the cross-media transformation of SWR – exemplified by the news format SWR Aktuell. The practice of cross-media is becoming increasingly prevalent at SWR, but complex structures and traditions challenge a swift implementation.
The findings are interpreted in line with Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework.
