At first, there is a systematic examination of Niklas Luhmann's sociological systems theory in order to comprehend the essential fundamental terms in all their facets. Building on this, the hospital is inspected more closely within a modern, functionally differentiated society, and it is analysed whether and how structures in such organisations arise as a result of society's requirements. It is based on the fact that the healthcare system has a firm place in the health policy and public discourse, but follows different rules than other areas of social life. Health is an undisputed good – possibly even the highest good in society – and is therefore outside of all ideological controversy. Numerous and highly different influences affect the institutions in which medical treatment takes place, such as from business, law, politics and science.
