Conventional theories of statehood find the “functioning” of political order in Lebanon puzzling: How could a political system survive for decades in which the state's monopoly on the use of force exists only in fragments, key government positions remained vacant for years, non-state actors decide on war and peace, and the interference of external powers is systematically encouraged by domestic political rivalries? This textbook is aimed at students of Islamic studies, Middle Eastern Studies, political science and related social sciences, and describes the development and interaction of the country's most important political institutions in the context of its crises and reform discussions.
