What rights do foreigners have in Turkey? To what extent had European law influenced Turkish national legislation before Turkey became an official EU candidate and in the run-up to becoming an EU member state? To answer these questions, the study presents and analyses the Turkish aliens and nationality law in comparison with EU law. It considers legislative materials, legal practice, literature and materials of Turkey’s EU accession negotiations. The Turkish aliens and nationality law is a field of law which forms an essential part of national sovereignty. Therefore, it is very significant to know whether there is an influence of European law and to know the reasons for this kind of self-restriction of the right to legislation.
