The European Commission has declared its intention to make Europe a pioneer in the development and use of AI systems. A key part of achieving this is strengthening trust in AI systems. To this end, it is essential that AI systems are developed in accordance with data protection regulations. Against this background, the question arises as to the compatibility of AI system development with the data processing principles set out in Article 5 of the GDPR. This book examines how the existing tensions between Article 5 of the GDPR and AI development can be resolved to balance the interests of all parties through GDPR interpretation.
