To enable unannounced doping controls top German athletes have to deposit a number of personal data in the web-based central Anti-Doping Administration and Management System (ADAMS). The collection, storage, use and global sharing of this information is associated with a number of legal problems, which have to be reviewed critically. In this dissertation the social, political and sports associational bases of the antidoping system are explored. Moreover, the compatibility of the data processing in ADAMS with the applicable laws, in particular with the legal principles of personal data protection are critically discussed. Particular emphasis was put on the voluntary character of the athletes’ consent, on the appropriateness of the various data processing operations and on the potential dangers of international transmission of athletes’ personal data.
