Description
After the failure of the Constitutional Treaty in the 2000s, the 'Conference on the Future of Europe' was the most important opportunity for politicians to present their ideas about the future of the EU.
By analysing speeches and motions in the European Parliament, the author identifies different narratives and shows how they reinforce and block each other. In doing so, he shows how decades of cooperation between European party families are breaking down and new alliances are forming. This diagnosis of fundamental shifts in visions for the EU is more is more relevant than ever at a time when the discourse of crisis tends to be pessimistic about the future.
