The regulation of the electricity industry is based on the term “grid”. Nevertheless, there is still no usable definition of the grid. Such a de facto receptive concept of the grid functions in unambiguous cases but offers little support when it comes to assessing new technical developments such as electricity storage. This thesis develops a definition of the term “grid” based on the requirements of European law and an economic analysis. Based on this definition, it assesses the new technical possibilities of storing electricity by grid operators. It also offers an overview of the relevant discussion in the USA.
