Description
The present study focusses on the German Council of Private International Law and its function as advisory body to the German Federal Ministry of Justice since 1953. Using the example of the 1986 reform concerning international matrimonial law and its further development, it analyses, for the first time, how the transfer of scientific knowledge to the political process works in this particular case. Therefore, the author assessed an extensive number of the Council’s files as well as unpublished sources from the Federal Archives and spoke to present members to achieve a legal and political qualification of the Committee. Part of the qualification was, not least, a comparison with the Council’s prototype, namely the Comité français de droit international privé.
