Can the defendant be connected to the first-instance criminal proceedings via audiovisual means while respecting constitutional and human rights guarantees and in accordance with fundamental procedural principles? In light of current challenges in criminal procedure and justice, and taking into account provisions in foreign and international criminal procedures, this thesis provides a comprehensive examination of the legal possibilities and limits of connecting defendants to first-instance criminal proceedings via audiovisual transmission, and proposes a concrete regulatory framework that is balanced in terms of the rule of law and suitable for practical application.
