Der Einfluss der Spätantike auf die staatsrechtliche Entwicklung im Mittelalter

The aim of the present work is to study the contribution of the Roman/Byzantine Empire to the process of Nation/State-building in Europe in the Middle Ages. Nation/State-building as a complex phenomenon is influenced by diverse contributing factors (geopolitical, economical, social, cultural, ethnic, religious); these factors and their mutual relations are analysed from the perspective of a particular historical situation that is characteristic for a state-building process. By focusing on the decisive influence of Byzantium on the political ideas and structures of the new states, this work tries to open a new perspective, highlighting the co-existence and interaction of political/cultural elements originating from differing development stages of European History in the early days.
Dimitra Karamboula is specialized in research of legal sources related to the restoration of the evolution of the Roman state and the historical continuity of Late Antiquity, Byzantine, and Post-Byzantine period. More specifically I work on the systematical analysis of private and public Roman, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine legal institutions and the critical study of the legal texts.
