This thesis provides a detailed breakdown of the European concept of work and sets out the relevant criteria for its application in practice. Building on this, it offers a comprehensive analysis of the copyright protection of non-audiovisual creations, taking into account the assessments underlying the protection of comparable types of works and trademark law. In doing so, it demonstrates how non-audiovisual creations can be integrated into a copyright system that is traditionally geared towards audiovisual perception. To this end, the author develops standards for defining the scope of protection and the enforcement of rights in light of technological progress, with practical guidelines for rights holders.
