Details
Nowadays, the EU and the project of forming a united Europe seem to be being tested permanently. Using the example of feuilleton coverage of the financial crisis in Europe (from 2008 onwards), this thesis analyses how culture journalists—as experts in narratives and framing—reflect on an economic topic. It works with two different methods: a content analysis of feuilleton coverage spanning six years and interviews with the heads of feuilleton departments: Dr. Michael Angele (FREITAG), Andreas Breitenstein (NZZ), Dr. Nils Minkmar (FAZ), Claudius Seidl (FAS), Dr. Adam Soboczynski (DIE ZEIT) and Dr. Heribert Prantl (SZ) comment on their analyses of the financial crisis from 2008 on. Is it possible to discover patterns and frames in the aforementioned coverage? Did the journalists even foresee the financial crisis? In this way, the study analyses the capacity of culture journalism to act as a social seismograph.
