Does leaving the church under Catholic law necessarily lead to excommunication? Does the Evangelical Church in ­Germany (EKD) view leaving the church less strictly than the Catholic Church? In her comparative legal study, the author explores many exciting and highly topical questions about leaving the church in Germany and in doing so ­identifies many similarities in the views of the Catholic Church and the EKD. In addition to a comprehensive ­consideration of the constitutional church law aspects of leaving the church, the author compares both church ­membership and the effects of leaving the church from the perspective of the Catholic Church and the EKD – and comes to new and interesting conclusions.
