Description
“The state is dead - long live the state”. These words, aimed at the continuity of monarchies, aptly describe the subject of the debate on the state. The “Leviathan”, already pronounced dead, is proving to be astonishingly alive. Today, in the liberal democracies of the West, there can hardly be any talk of a strong state. But one thing is certain: a core of state regulatory power is indispensable for maintaining domestic peace.
This is the major theme of Thomas Hobbes (1588 - 1679) and his Leviathan from 1651. It is therefore worth taking a closer look at the English state thinker Hobbes and his extensive work. Twelve contributions show that Hobbes'
ideas have lost none of their appeal even at the beginning of the 21st century. Leviathan, which has often enough been pronounced dead, is as alive, but also as controversial, as it was at its
birth.
This volume is the revised new edition of “Der Leviathan”, the previous edition of which was published by Nomos in 2000.
