All conscious functions of perception and cognition are controlled by the cerebrum. Neuroscience has provided insights into the structure of knowledge representation and neuronal information processing. The possibility of imaging techniques has contributed significantly to the understanding of these processes. The exploration of the human musical mind here follows the cognitive interest of pedagogy. New insights from brain research are reflected in a changed understanding of musical learning. A cognitive-psychological approach seeks to determine the meaning-generating consciousness behind perception and to shed light on it in the sense of learning-theoretical conclusions. The second edition of "Der Musikverstand" expanded the neurobiological approach in the light of new research results; the third edition supplemented the range of topics with questions of mirror neurons and evolutionary-biological aspects of vocal learning. The fourth edition, on the other hand, offers an unchanged reprint of the expanded third edition, because the basic approach of understanding music learning as the construction of mental representations remains valid.
