„A [...] distinguished, very [...] reliable man of Germanic studies,’ ‘a hard worker [...] and quite the scholar’ – this is how one of the permanent secretaries of the Prussian Academy of Sciences described Heinrich Brunner's successor in the most prestigious chair of Germanic legal history in the German-speaking world: Ernst Heymann. As successor to the founding director Ernst Rabel, Heymann also headed the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Foreign and International Private Law from 1937 until his death in 1946. On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of this institute, this volume traces the life, work and influence of a man who, highly esteemed in his day, held a number of influential positions in the academic system of the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and during National Socialism.
