Party democracy is in a good state of health, at least that is what research into political parties would have us believe. According to such research, there is neither discontent nor crisis among political parties. However, using new studies and statistics, this book proves that these parties are hardly fulfilling their functions any more and that key democratic principles, such as democratic equality and the choice between different governments, are being undermined. The political class has become significantly detached from the electorate and is being inadequately regulated. Would the direct democratic innovations and electoral reform demanded by Hans Herbert von Arnim, probably the best known academic critic of political parties, be of any help in combating these problems?
