Popular objection was established in Switzerland at the federal and cantonal levels and essentially constitutes a suspensive, facultative referendum at the request of the people. This thesis examines the question of the constitutional admissibility of popular objection within the German system of direct decision-making rights of the people. The relationship between representative and direct democracy is subject to a fundamental analysis and reduced to its constitutional essence. The study demonstrates that the state constitutional legislature enjoys broad, but not unlimited leeways.
