Außenpolitik und Internationale Ordnung
Description
It is puzzling how the proportion of self expectations and demands by others materialize in national security policies. Concerning security policy, Sweden, a small state, appears to be more influenced by self expectations, whereas Germany, a European great power, is rather focused on the expectations voiced by other states or international organizations.
The study combines role theory with scope conditions taken from the research on international socialization and develops an analytical framework for the empirical investigation of the impact others have (“alter impact”). In so doing, the study manages to systematically determine the degree of alter impact in both states since 1945 and hence to deduce hypotheses.
