Description
Ovid’s calendrical poem, the Fasti, was written during a period of political change. Under Augustus, the calendar served not only as a means of temporal organisation, but also as a basis for the construction of cultural identity and the legitimisation of the new imperial order. This volume brings together contributions that explore the Fasti at the intersection of poetry and history (of time), examining it as a poetic negotiation of calendrical knowledge with all its political, poetological and cultural dimensions. The contributions thus center on the question of the aetiological knowledge displayed in Ovid’s calendar, its role in Rome’s discourse of memory, and its entertaining reflection on Augustan themes.
