Description
This book traces the changes on Mount Namsan in Seoul between 1892, when the first Japanese Shintō shrine began operating in Seoul, until Korean independence in 1945, when the shrines on Namsan were dismantled.
The Japanese Shintō shrines and Buddhist temples on Namsan mainly used rituals to educate the Korean population to become loyal subjects of the empire. Therefore, the rituals and events on the mountain are the main focus of this study. It is shown how State-Shintō, as it was realised in the colonial framework of Korea, differed from Shintō in Japan itself, which has recently been described as "imperial". Thus it is possible to shed new light on assimilation policies, scrutinizing alledged breaks and continuities.
