The term appropriation refers to various forms of reproducing copyrighted works. Already in the 1970s, artists of Appropriation Art used copies for their works of art. With digitalization and the culture of participation in the Internet, the techniques of Appropriation Art were democratized and memes and GIFs have become a means of mass communication. These forms of image use - in Appropriation Art and in the digital sphere – are being evaulated regarding copyright infringement. The focus of this evaluation is on whether the prevailing copyright law takes the social reality of digital communication adequately into account and on how legal latitude for appropriation can be created.
