Description
In today's Europe, 70 years after the end of World War II, armed conflicts are still sad reality. But what causes and how should we respond so that this development can be prevented? The numerous conflicts in the Balkans in the 19th and 20th century make this region a fruitful field of research. For the reader, throughout this PhD thesis, the behavior of the European great powers and political players gets more concrete and better understandable. The author describes conflicts on the same territory in two different ages. There is a surprising number of parallels, despite the large differences in time. The different outcome of the conflicts is the central subject of this work. In the final part of the thesis the civil war in the Ukraine is analyzed, a conflict that again provokes international friction and is another example of the current challenges in the European security policy.
