Description
This book examined the legal status and self-understanding of Catholic universities in early modern Germany, focusing on Cologne and Ingolstadt. It seeked to reveal and present the internal logic of these universities and their enduring characteristics, considering that previous research has mainly focused on the societal role of universities. The central analysis revolved around corporatism and ecclesiastical identity, understood as the enduring characteristics of each university’s legal status. This book examined not only the formative but also representative side of university self-understanding, which manifested in privileges or in actual conflict cases. The analyse made clear how individual universities preserved the enduring characteristics of their self-image despite external pressure and how they represented this image to the outside world.
