The metropolis is more than just a city or mega-city: it possesses a dynamism that goes beyond its own identity. As a ‘mother city’ in the literal sense, it is a force field, which was in antiquity the centre from which colonial cities were founded. Today the founding of colonies no longer plays a role, but the metropolis continues to possess its own attraction. The metropolis is the dream city for those far away and all too often a nightmare for those who seek to realise their own dreams there. A metropolis is thus historically a place of the imagination and the subject of literary projects that feed on this social, political and aesthetic force field.
