Die Fläche 13 der Außensiedlung an der Hünenburg

The Hünenburg hillfort near Watenstedt, district of Helmstedt, is a unique central site of the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age in eastern Lower Saxony. Highly specialized bronze metallurgy took place in its contemporary outer settlement. Area 13 is centrally located within this densely populated outer settlement. It is notable for numerous domestic animal carcasses that were intentionally deposited there. To interpret these findings within the context of the larger settlement, a comprehensive archaeozoological analysis was conducted. Based on this, the study aims to provide a nuanced interpretation of Late Bronze Age animal deposits in Central Europe, taking into account the symbolic roles of animals in Bronze Age world building.
